Mahama Quashes Third-Term Rumours, Affirms Commitment to Democracy

President John Mahama has dismissed speculation that he may push for constitutional changes to extend Ghana’s presidential term limits and allow himself a third term in office.

Addressing journalists at the Presidential Media Encounter on Wednesday at the Jubilee House, the President laughed off the claims with a touch of humour.

“Look in my face — do I look like a supreme leader?” he quipped.

Mr. Mahama stressed that his government has no intention of tampering with the 1992 Constitution, which restricts presidents to a maximum of two four-year terms.

He recalled how, even when his party once secured a two-thirds majority in Parliament, he resisted using it to suppress the opposition.

“I’m a Democrat through and through. Even when we attained two-thirds of Parliament, I said we are not going to use it to ride roughshod over the minority. We are going to give opportunity for democracy to flourish,” he explained.

The President emphasised that undermining institutions for political gain poses a threat to Ghana’s democratic development.
