Mahama: Free SHS Policy Not Only Maintained but Strengthened

President John Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, rejecting claims that the initiative has been abandoned.

Speaking at his maiden Presidential Media Encounter on Wednesday, September 10, the President said his government has made the largest-ever investment in the policy since its inception.

“Contrary to the widespread misinformation that was circulated before December 7, 2024, the Free SHS policy has not only been maintained — indeed, it has been strengthened,” Mr. Mahama declared.

He disclosed that GH¢3.5 billion has been dedicated to sustaining the policy, the highest budgetary allocation in its history.

The President explained that beyond improving access, steps are being taken to ensure quality education.

“We understand that access without quality is inadequate, and that’s why we’re implementing the decentralisation of the feeding policy, allowing school management to make their own arrangements and provide students with quality meals,” he said.

Mr. Mahama also highlighted reforms in basic education, describing it as the foundation of the education ladder.

“Our commitment to foundational learning is equally strong. Basic education has received its highest budget allocation in almost a decade. With GH¢564.6 million allocated so far for textbooks, we are addressing long-standing challenges, particularly those caused by the reduced funding of the recent past,” he added.
