The La State Council in Accra has reaffirmed the enforcement of a ban on funerals and related activities within its traditional jurisdiction, as the customary period of noisemaking remains in effect.
In a statement released on Thursday, 28 August, the Council said it had taken note of public announcements regarding a planned one-week memorial for the late Ghanaian highlife icon, Charles Kojo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba. While offering condolences to the family, friends, and admirers of the music legend, the Council stressed that the ongoing ban must be respected.
The directive, which began on Monday, 11 August 2025, prohibits all forms of noisemaking, including funeral services and commemorative events. It applies across the La Traditional Area, extending from the main township to Maalejor along the Dodowa road, and Ayi Mensah near the Aburi mountains.
According to the Council, the period marks a sacred time when traditional leaders engage in spiritual observances, and disruptions of any kind will not be tolerated.
“All persons, families, groups, and organisers are cautioned against any attempt to hold or facilitate funeral events within the La Traditional Area during this period,” the statement warned. “Any such planned activity must be postponed, rescheduled, or cancelled outright.”
The Council said the ban will remain in force until Friday, 5 September 2025, at 6:00 p.m., and that anyone who flouts the directive will face appropriate customary and legal consequences.
It also assured Daddy Lumba’s family of the Council’s support and solidarity after the ban is lifted, noting that traditional protocols will be observed in honouring his memory at the appropriate time.
