The Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region, Abdul-Malik Azenbe, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants on the evening of Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in what authorities suspect was a targeted attack.
Witnesses said two men arrived at the residence on a motorcycle, with one of the attackers reportedly armed with an AK-47 rifle. The gunman opened fire on Azenbe before fleeing the scene. No group has claimed responsibility, and the motive for the attack remains unclear.
Azenbe, who had been enskinned as Kadi Naaba just three months ago, was initially taken to Manhyia District Hospital and later transferred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe visited the chief’s family shortly after the incident and pledged a full investigation into the killing. Authorities have not yet made any arrests.
The fatal shooting has sparked concern among regional leaders and community members, particularly given the rising security challenges in parts of the country. Police have increased patrols in the area and appealed to the public for any information that could assist the investigation.
