Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, on Wednesday called for strict enforcement of laws against child abuse and gender-based violence, following the emergence of a video allegedly showing a senior high school official in a sexually compromising situation with a minor.
Speaking at an event marking the start of Ghana’s “16 Days of Activism” campaign against gender-based violence, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang underscored what she described as a disturbing pattern of misconduct by men in positions of authority.
“It is unacceptable,” she said. “Persons who engage in such acts must face the full rigors of the law.”
Her remarks came after Gender Minister Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey confirmed that her ministry is working with the Ghana Police Service to ensure the arrest of the Assistant Headmaster of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Senior High School. The official was allegedly filmed in an inappropriate situation with a 13-year-old female student.
“Although the school has already taken administrative action by dismissing or suspending the headmaster, we are moving further with legal proceedings,” Dr. Lartey said. “We will use this period of activism to engage communities more broadly on identifying and preventing abuse.”
The video, which circulated widely on social media, has drawn sharp public criticism and renewed calls for stronger safeguards in schools across the country.
Government officials say the campaign in October will focus on public education, victim support, and institutional accountability.
