Ministry of Health has processed salary payments for 321 Pharmacist House Officers who completed their housemanships earlier this year, marking a step forward in addressing mounting financial obligations within the public healthcare sector.
The Ministry disclosed the development in a statement Tuesday, characterizing the move as part of broader efforts to clear salary arrears across health worker categories. “This reflects the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring every qualified professional is supported in delivering essential healthcare services to Ghanaians,” it said.
However, attention is now shifting to a separate group: the 2024 cohort of Rotation Nurses and Allied Health Interns. These individuals began their mandatory rotations in May 2024 and concluded in May 2025, but have yet to receive payment for their year of service.
The Ministry attributes the delay to the prior administration’s failure to secure financial clearance before the interns were deployed. Officials say they are working in coordination with other government agencies to expedite the clearance and release of funds.
“We wish to reassure all affected interns that their concerns are being addressed as a matter of urgency,” the statement said, adding that the Ministry is taking steps to establish a more sustainable payment system to prevent such lapses in the future.
The payment backlog has sparked frustration among interns and recent graduates in the sector, many of whom have relied on personal funds or family support during their unpaid service.
