The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced government plans to build a 50,000-capacity stadium at the Borteyman Sports Complex, as part of a broader vision to transform the enclave into a modern sports city.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Mr. Adams said the project is central to government’s commitment to upgrading sports infrastructure to international standards.
“We are looking to have a new stadium of that size around our Borteyman Sports Complex because we want to elevate that whole space into a sports city or village, so that international clubs can come and camp and train there,” he explained.
According to the Minister, the proposed facility will not only provide a world-class stadium but also include residential accommodation for national teams. This, he said, will reduce the financial burden of housing players during international assignments. “When this is done, in the future, you will not see accommodation for the Black Stars on the national budget. But we are working on a PPP arrangement to deliver it,” he added.
Mr. Adams disclosed that the government is targeting a minimum of 50,000 seats, with construction expected to be completed before 2028. The initiative is part of a wider strategy to position Ghana as a sports hub in Africa, capable of hosting major international events, attracting foreign teams for training camps, and boosting sports tourism.
The proposed Borteyman stadium will complement the existing facilities built for the 2023 African Games, further solidifying the complex’s role as a flagship centre for sports development in Ghana.
