In a move to boost morale and support Ghanaian football on the continental stage, the government has handed over $50,000 each to Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars ahead of their participation in the CAF Champions League.
The announcement was made by President John Dramani Mahama on Saturday during a courtesy visit by the two clubs to the Jubilee House. The delegation included officials from the Ministry of Sports and the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The funds, according to the presidency, are intended to support the clubs’ preparations and logistics as they gear up for one of Africa’s most competitive football tournaments.
“This is not just about football—it’s about national pride,” President Mahama said. He encouraged both teams to “give it their all and fly the Ghanaian flag high.”
But the day wasn't only about football. President Mahama also took the opportunity to highlight his administration’s broader sports agenda, including plans to construct seven new stadia across Ghana in 2026, particularly targeting the newly created regions.
The Minister of Sports praised the commitment shown by the players and expressed confidence in their readiness to represent Ghana honorably.
GFA President Kurt Okraku used the occasion to call on corporate Ghana to invest more in the local league, saying private sector backing remains critical for building a sustainable football ecosystem.
With the government throwing its support behind the teams, the spotlight now shifts to the pitch, where the real test begins.
