Government Earmarks GHC1bn to Phase Out Double-Track System – Haruna Iddrisu

The government has announced plans to allocate GHC1 billion from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to gradually phase out the double-track system in Senior High Schools (SHSs).

Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, made the disclosure on Thursday, September 11, 2025, during the commissioning of a new staff accommodation facility at Accra Girls’ Senior High School.

According to him, the allocation will be incorporated into the 2026 national budget to help address the infrastructure challenges that necessitated the introduction of the double-track system.

“We are committed to ending the double-track system as part of our broader efforts to enhance the quality of Senior High School education,” Mr. Iddrisu said.

He added that President John Mahama has directed the Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson, to ensure the GHC1 billion allocation is captured in the 2026 GETFund formula to facilitate a smooth transition.
