The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that the Government of Ghana has fully settled all outstanding arrears of the Capitation Grant for public basic schools, covering the period from 2023 to date.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 23, GES described the payment as a reflection of the government’s firm commitment to the effective administration and smooth functioning of basic education across the country.
The Capitation Grant serves as a vital funding mechanism for public basic schools, supporting the purchase of teaching and learning materials, minor infrastructural repairs, and other essential school management activities. Timely disbursement of the grant allows headteachers to operate with greater autonomy and deliver quality education.
GES extended its appreciation to both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for prioritising the payments, even amid prevailing economic challenges.
The Service also commended headteachers for their patience and dedication in maintaining continuous teaching and learning activities throughout the delay in funding.
“We urge all school leaders to use the funds responsibly and in line with the guidelines for the utilisation of the Capitation Grant,” the statement emphasized.
It further noted that district and regional monitoring teams will be stepping up supervision to ensure accountability and value for money in the use of the funds.
GES reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to improve learning outcomes, enhance school management systems, and promote inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all children in Ghana.
