The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) says nine institutions, including several state-owned enterprises, owe the government a combined total of GH¢47 million in unpaid taxes.
The disclosure was made by the GRA Commissioner-General, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, during an appearance before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Monday, 25 August.
According to the GRA, the Graphic Communications Group tops the list with tax arrears of GH¢3.4 million. It is followed by GIHOC Distilleries, which owes GH¢2.1 million, while the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has an outstanding debt of GH¢136,000.
Officials from the Authority said many of the indebted institutions, particularly those in the public sector, have blamed their inability to meet tax obligations on ongoing cash flow difficulties.
In addition to the GH¢47 million owed in direct taxes, the GRA revealed that Value Added Tax (VAT) arrears across various entities now stand at GH¢116 million.
The Commissioner for Domestic Tax Revenue, Edward Apenteng Gyamerah, confirmed the VAT figure during the session.
Mr Sarpong told the Committee that the Authority is stepping up efforts to recover the outstanding amounts and strengthen compliance measures across all sectors.
