The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, has dismissed claims by Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin that residents of the constituency have endured more than two weeks of water shortages.
In a letter dated August 20, 2025, Mr. Afenyo-Markin alleged that the disruptions had caused significant hardship for the constituency’s estimated population of 140,000 people.
Addressing the media during a visit to the Winneba Water Treatment Plant on Monday, September 1, Mr. Mutawakilu insisted that available records contradict the MP’s assertion.
“The data I have in the office does not support the assertion he [Afenyo-Markin] has made, and therefore, there was a need to pay a visit to verify the claim. It is evident that the claim cannot be supported by facts on the ground,” he said.
According to him, the Winneba Headworks currently produces 9,700 cubic meters of water dailywithout any prolonged interruptions.
“There hadn’t been any interruptions for about six hours, a full day, two days, or three days. If you look at the data, it doesn’t support the claim he made. As a former Board Chair of GWL, if there were evidence, he should have consulted the management of GWL. I want to state emphatically that the claim that 140,000 customers have been affected as a result of the shutdown cannot be supported by facts on the ground,” Mr. Mutawakilu added.
The GWL Managing Director also revealed that steps are underway to restore connections affected by the Kasoa–Winneba highway expansion project, assuring customers that the utility company remains committed to reliable service delivery.
