The government of Ghana announced Thursday the death of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, a prominent political figure and founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement. She was reported to have passed away earlier in the day following a short illness.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Government Communications, government officials expressed “deep regret” over her passing and extended condolences to her family. The announcement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Minister of Government Communications, who serves as spokesperson to the president.
“Government extends its deepest condolences to her immediate family,” the statement said.
Mrs. Rawlings, widow of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was a pioneering advocate for women’s empowerment in Ghana and played an influential role in the country’s political and social development for more than four decades.
