GFA Congress Approves Extension of Presidential Term Limit to Three Terms

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Tuesday approved a significant constitutional amendment extending the presidential term limit from two to three terms, a move aimed at ensuring greater leadership continuity in the country’s football governance.

The decision, reached during the GFA’s 31st Ordinary Congress held in Prampram, allows the association’s president to serve up to 12 years in office—up from the previous maximum of eight. The annual Congress, convened in accordance with Article 31(2) of the GFA Statutes (2019), gathers delegates from all 124 member bodies to chart the strategic direction of Ghanaian football ahead of each season.

The term extension aligns the GFA with governance frameworks endorsed by both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), according to association officials. Delegates reportedly voted overwhelmingly in favor of the measure, signaling broad institutional support

“The change is intended to foster long-term planning and leadership stability within the GFA,” the Association said in a post-Congress statement. Supporters argue the extended term will enable future presidents to implement and see through developmental initiatives that require more time than a traditional two-term tenure permits.

The amendment could have immediate implications for current GFA President Kurt Okraku, who is in his second term and would now be eligible to seek re-election for a third and final term, should he choose to run again.

The move marks a notable shift in the leadership structure of Ghanaian football and is likely to prompt both domestic and international scrutiny as the GFA seeks to balance governance reform with accountability.
