Ghana’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced it will stop issuing aluminium ‘Drive from Port’ (DP) number plates beginning August 1, 2025. Instead, newly imported vehicles will receive digital DP stickers as part of a broader effort to modernize and secure the vehicle registration process.
The change, according to the DVLA, is aimed at improving efficiency, boosting security, and cutting down on fraud in vehicle imports. Gone are the clunky metal plates — in their place, a sleeker, smarter system designed to fit into Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.
To ensure safety isn’t compromised, the DVLA is teaming up with the State Insurance Company (SIC). Every vehicle issued a DP sticker will automatically receive insurance coverage before exiting the port — a first-of-its-kind integration in Ghana’s vehicle registration system.
“This move is aimed at making DVLA services secure and efficient for our clients,” the Authority said in a statement, adding that public cooperation is key to a smooth transition.
The DVLA says this reform is just one part of a larger plan to digitize its services and make the vehicle registration process faster, safer, and more transparent.
