The family of music legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu—known to fans across the world as Daddy Lumba—has confirmed his death and appealed for privacy as they come to terms with the sudden loss.
The 60-year-old highlife musician died on Saturday, July 26, at the Bank Hospital in Accra. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across Ghana’s political, cultural, and entertainment spheres.
Speaking to Channel One in an interview, the family’s attorney, Fati Ali Yallah, said the news came as a shock and left the family too devastated to address the public directly.
“Very shocking. The family is just in a state of shock, state of pain. They cannot even talk,” Yallah said. “We are all shocked—including me, his lawyer. It is difficult for me.”
She added that the family authorized her to formally announce the death following growing speculation and misinformation circulating on social media.
“We were just mandated to announce the news of his demise because it was flying all over social media. Everybody was writing anything, so the family mandated us as his lawyer to announce it officially,” she explained.
The cause of death has not been disclosed, and Yallah indicated that the family has requested that all other details remain confidential for the time being.
“The family again has instructed that all other information be made confidential. We cannot disclose anything until we are instructed to do so,” she said.
An official statement with further details is expected to be released in due course.
Daddy Lumba, whose career spanned more than three decades, was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s highlife genre. His death marks the end of a musical era that helped define the soundtrack of modern Ghana.
