The Article 146 Committee of Inquiry has adjourned proceedings on the second petition seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, after both the petitioner and the Chief Justice jointly requested additional time.
The Committee, which is examining three separate petitions submitted to President John Dramani Mahama in March this year, had planned to proceed with the second case following the conclusion of hearings on the first.
Adjournment for Fairness
Announcing the adjournment, the Committee’s Chairman explained that the decision was taken “in the spirit of fairness and due process.” While emphasising the panel’s duty to act expeditiously, he noted that it is equally important to allow all parties sufficient time to prepare their submissions.
“Accordingly, we shall be reporting on the second and third petitions in due time,” the Chairman said during the presentation of the Committee’s report on the first petition at the Jubilee House.
First Petition Concluded
The Committee has already completed its work on the first petition, which involved extensive testimony and nearly 10,000 pages of documentary evidence. A sealed recommendation on that matter has been submitted to the President for consideration.
