A Chinese national and his Ghanaian driver have allegedly been shot and killed in a suspected robbery attack at an illegal mining site in Subri-Nkwanta, a community in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.
According to a report by myjoyonline.com, the deadly incident occurred on Monday, July 7, 2025, leaving residents of the mining town in a state of fear and shock.
Eyewitnesses say the victims, believed to be engaged in illegal small-scale mining, locally known as galamsey, were ambushed by unidentified gunmen while returning from their mining site with gold concentrate, commonly referred to as “black.”
The attackers reportedly opened fire without warning, killing both men instantly before fleeing into a nearby forest with the stolen gold.
Police have not yet released the identities of the deceased, but confirm that their bodies have been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Authorities are currently treating the incident as a possible robbery, although investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
Some residents suspect the killings may be connected to ongoing tensions between rival illegal mining groups, who often clash over land and mining territories.
“This isn’t the first time something like this has happened,” a resident lamented. “We keep hearing gunshots every now and then. It’s becoming too dangerous to even live here.”
