Bawumia Embarks on Ashanti Region Tour Ahead of 2026 NPP Presidential Primaries

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana and a leading contender in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential race, is set to embark on a high-stakes political tour across the Ashanti Region, a party stronghold, from September 10 to 12.

The tour marks the beginning of a broader effort by Dr. Bawumia to consolidate support ahead of the NPP’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026. According to campaign aides, the three-day visit will span seven key operational zones within the region, including Adansi, Amansie, Asante Akim, Sekyere-Kumawu, Afigya Kwabre, Mampong Nsuta, Ahafo and Atwima, as well as Kumasi Zones 1 and 2.

At each stop, Dr. Bawumia is expected to meet with regional and constituency executives, Members of Parliament, former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), former CEOs of state enterprises, and members of the Regional Council of Elders. The meetings will serve as both a formal announcement of his candidacy and a strategic move to shore up regional backing.

Campaign officials say the former Vice President will use the opportunity to articulate his policy priorities and reaffirm his message of unity, peace and reconciliation—an approach aimed at energizing the party base and positioning himself as a unifying figure within the NPP.

The itinerary begins Wednesday in the Adansi, Amansie and Asante Akim zones. On Thursday, the campaign will move to Sekyere Effiduase-Kumawu, Nsuta-Mampong, and Afigya Kwabre. The final leg, scheduled for Friday, will take Dr. Bawumia to Ahafo Atwima and the two Kumasi zones.

Party insiders view the Ashanti Region as a bellwether for internal party dynamics, and success there is seen as critical for any candidate hoping to clinch the NPP’s presidential nomination. As such, Dr. Bawumia’s tour is widely viewed as a strategic test of his grassroots appeal and organizational strength.

Following this preliminary swing through Ashanti, sources close to the campaign indicate that Dr. Bawumia will intensify his outreach, engaging directly with polling station and electoral area executives in a full-scale mobilization effort ahead of the primaries.

The NPP’s presidential primaries come at a pivotal time, as the party looks to maintain its political dominance in the 2028 general elections following its two-term administration.
