Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has referred four presidential nominees for deputy ministerial positions to Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting, in what officials describe as the final round of appointments to complete the President’s ministerial team.
The nominees include Dorcas Affo-Toffey for Deputy Minister of Transport, James Gyakye Quayson for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Adam Sukparu for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, and Grace Ayensu-Danquah for the Health Ministry.
“These nominees have demonstrated significant public service experience and integrity,” Mr. Bagbin told lawmakers on Thursday, July 17, adding that the necessary documents have been provided to facilitate the vetting process. However, he emphasized that the committee is not under obligation to expedite the reviews.
The appointments were announced by President John Dramani Mahama on July 9, in accordance with Articles 78(1) and 79(1) of Ghana’s Constitution, which mandate parliamentary approval for ministerial appointments.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, described the nominees as the “final batch” of deputy ministers. Their approval, he said, would round out the President’s ministerial lineup as his administration pushes forward with its governance agenda.
The Appointments Committee will now assess the qualifications, records, and suitability of the nominees before submitting its report to the full House for a vote.
