Asantehene Announces Death of Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has formally announced the death of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the Queen Mother of the Asante Kingdom, at age 98.

The announcement was made during a closed-door meeting of the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace, convened with representatives from all paramountcies and royal clans. A one-week observance is scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2025, in accordance with traditional rites.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III passed away on August 7, 2025. She ascended to the role of Asantehemaa in 2017, following the passing of her mother and predecessor, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II. Her official installation was held during the 67th birthday celebration of her brother, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace.

The occasion also marked the inauguration of a refurbished ceremonial park—named in honor of the late Queen Mother—situated opposite the Manhyia Museum. The park, now featuring artificial turf, has since become a prominent venue for royal and cultural events in the Ashanti Region.

A respected figure in Ghanaian traditional leadership, Nana Konadu Yiadom III was known for her dedication to cultural preservation and her pivotal role in supporting the Asantehene in both ceremonial and governance matters. Her reign was characterized by a quiet influence that extended across the kingdom's sociopolitical landscape.

The Asantehemaa plays a central role in the Asante royal succession system and serves as a custodian of tradition in one of West Africa’s most enduring monarchies. Her passing marks the end of a significant chapter in the modern history of the Asante Kingdom.
