The National Peace Council (NPC) has called an emergency meeting with the leadership of the country’s two main political parties ahead of the crucial by-election in Akwatia.
In a letter dated 30 August 2025, the Council invited representatives of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to a joint dialogue session in Akwatia, scheduled for Monday, 1 September at 14:00 local time.
The talks are part of the NPC’s broader efforts to ensure a peaceful and tolerant political environment amid rising tensions in the lead-up to the vote.
The Executive Secretary of the NPC, Dr George Amoh, said the session follows earlier separate engagements with the NDC and NPP in late July. He added that the Council is committed to fostering cooperation between political actors to avoid unrest during the by-election.
“In fulfilment of our pledge to engage you ahead of the Akwatia by-elections, the Board respectfully requests a short meeting with the leadership of both the NDC and NPP,” the letter said.
Copies of the invitation were also sent to the chairpersons of both parties and the Chairman of the National Peace Council.
The Akwatia seat has drawn national attention, with observers warning of potential flashpoints in what is expected to be a fiercely contested vote.
