Kofi Akpaloo, leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and former presidential candidate, is under investigation for alleged financial crimes, including fraud and money laundering.
He was arrested by Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, 3 September, and remains in custody despite being granted police bail.
Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai confirmed the arrest in a Facebook post on Friday, stating that Mr Akpaloo is also being investigated for causing financial loss to the state and the alleged dissipation of public funds.
Police bail was granted with conditions set at GH¢10 million (approximately $830,000), with two sureties required to justify the bond. However, the bail conditions have not yet been met, and Mr Akpaloo remains in EOCO custody.
He was arrested at his residence in Kumasi, in Ghana's Ashanti Region.
Mr Akpaloo contested the 2024 general elections on the ticket of the LPG, a smaller party that has grown in visibility in recent years, particularly among young voters. He is known for advocating policies focused on youth empowerment and entrepreneurship.
The EOCO has not commented publicly on the details of the allegations, and the Liberal Party has yet to issue a statement regarding the arrest.
Mr Akpaloo has not responded publicly to the claims.
