Agona Swedru Senior High School has indefinitely suspended 25 final-year students following a campus brawl that began with a same-sex romantic proposal and spiraled into retaliatory violence, school officials confirmed.
According to administrators, the incident was triggered when one male student allegedly proposed a romantic relationship to another male classmate. The proposal was rejected, and the student who declined reportedly shared the encounter with peers. Those students are said to have encouraged him to feign interest in order to entrap the other student.
The confrontation turned physical during the arranged meeting. A group of students—believed to be associates of the student who had rejected the proposal—allegedly ambushed and assaulted the student who had initiated it. The victim then informed dormitory mates, who launched a retaliatory attack. The cycle of violence escalated quickly, drawing in dozens of students and prompting disciplinary action by the school.
“All 25 students involved were granted a fair hearing before the decision was taken,” said Headmistress Golda Esi Andam in an interview with local media outlet Onua News. “They will sit for their final examinations, but only under the supervision of their parents.”
Mrs. Andam emphasized that the suspensions are disciplinary, not punitive to the point of denying the students their right to education. She noted that the school is enforcing the Ghana Education Service’s code of conduct and urged students to observe school regulations to prevent future disruptions.
The incident has drawn attention to the growing tensions in Ghanaian schools around issues of sexual identity and student behavior, with calls for clearer guidelines and support systems in handling such sensitive matters.
